In 2000, Leon and Verwray Scott took a long-planned trip to Africa. Despite their vacation mindset, they were soon drawn to the difficult circumstances confronting many of the continent's residents. The two returned to Kenya in 2003 to work with schools and students in Keumbu, Kenya. Here, they saw how a modest level of support often had a life-changing impact.
Subsequently, they met Pastor Zedekiah Manwa. Pastor Zedekiah, founded the Uthiru Church in Nairobi and was attending Atlanta's Beulah University. In 2004, the three established Utengo (refuge or shelter in Swahili) and began to raise support for targeted projects at underfunded schools and churches; with 100% of funds going to the projects.
After completing school, Pastor Zedekiah returned to Kenya to establish a new church that continues to thrive. Utengo partners with Pastor Zedekiah and other Kenyan leaders to support projects which are likely to have a positive and lasting impact on the spiritual and physical well-being of impoverished individuals and communities.
We are grateful for what God has done through him and the many donors and co-labors who make this work possible.
