Nyamware Secondary School, Keumbu Kenya

More water leads to more class time and improved academic success
Water is an essential element of academic life, from hydration, to cooking and cleaning. Many schools lack the advantage of a nearby water supply. As a result, female students often bear the burden of retrieving water from distant springs or rivers. Five in-ground caverns installed at area schools by Utengo have helped to alleviate this inequity. An extensive system of gutters on the available structures direct runoff to the tank, thereby maximizing collection and minimizing the number of trips to distant water sources.
